I love the potential that music has to touch lives. When I was growing up, the songs of my favorite artists were able to carry the weight of some of my most complicated and devastating personal emotions. Ever since I discovered that power, I have lived to attempt to do that for others. Music has a power unlike almost anything else I’ve experienced to open hearts and touch the core of an emotion, to let the listener know: “I’ve been there. You’re not alone.”
That – to me – is beautiful. It’s why I do this.
Nearly twelve years ago, I abandoned everything else – promising alternative futures notwithstanding – to chase this wild dream of being a performing songwriter. It’s been a hell of a chase. In making 8 albums and EPs, touring nationally, and playing over 1,000 shows… I’ve learned a few things about being an artist… most importantly these two:
1. the most rewarding thing about being an artist is when something I’ve written touches someone’s life.
2. perhaps even more importantly, I am nothing without my friends and fans… you guys.
In a way (perhaps because I was scared that I didn’t have what it takes) I’ve never fully committed to this dream… until now. This album ‘Heart on Fire’ is where I take a BIG shot on myself.
This is the album I’ve always wanted to write, because I started writing from the gut and the heart… like I did when I was fifteen, but with years of craft to back it up. I’m making music to make music, not to fit the market… and ironically, some of my most marketable songs have emerged. I’m letting my heart out without any filters. And it feels like home. I can’t wait… Click here to view more.
I’ve been reading and listening to a lot of biographies lately. I love them. I love that they’re never what I expect – even when I know a lot about the subject before-hand. I love discovering three-dimensional human beings behind endlessly-propagated caricatures and anecdotes. I love the moment in the course of every good one […]Continue Reading
I clearly remember the day… the moment… that I became a singer/songwriter for life. I was sixteen years old… at a camp talent show in Seattle. I had already been writing songs for three years. I thought it was one of the coolest things in the world that my favorite artists could get under my […]Continue Reading
This post is about my new album “Heart on Fire.“ Check it out on KickStarter! “So do you want to make a real record?” It was 2 in the afternoon and I had been up for close to twenty hours when I heard it… so I sort of stammered… “wh-what do you mean by that?” “You’re […]Continue Reading
